COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT
The Polytechnic Library has a Collection Development Department which engages in selection and acquisition of information resources in line with the various courses being offered by its parent organization. The Polytechnic Library regularly acquires information resources based on users’ demands and courses being offered or introduced by the Polytechnic.
CATALOGUNIG DEPARTMENT
The Cataloguing Department is another sectionof the Polytechnic Library that is responsible for knowledge organisation, that is, cataloguing and classification of information resources to ease access and retrieval of information materials by library users. The Cataloguing Department adopts the Library of Congress Classification Scheme, Schedules and Cutter-Saborne Table for knowledge organization.
SERIALSDEPARTMENT
This is also another unit of the Polytechnic Library. It has a vast collection of journals in such fields as Library and Information Science, Law, Medicine, Engineering, Accounting, Banking and Finance, Mass Communication, Agricultural Science, Languages and Literature, Environmental Science/Geography/Surveying, Management, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Technology/IT/ICT/Computer Science, Education, Statistics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Inter-disciplinary and multidisciplinary journals. It also contains indexes and abstracts.
The Polytechnic Library also acquires, on a monthly basis, newspapers for library users such as students, lecturers and other members of the Polytechnic Community. These newspapers include Punch, Vanguard, The Nation and Local Sports Newspaper.
REFERENCE DEPARTMENT
The Polytechnic Library has possesses a Reference Department which provides information resources for reference or consultation purposes. These information materials are Dictionaries, Encyclopaedias, Maps/Atlases/Guidebooks/Manuals/Directories, Scriptural Materials (Bible etc.), Government Publications, Reports, etc. Library users are not allowed to borrow these information resources. Rather, library patrons can only use them within the Reference Department of the Library.
CIRCULATION SECTION
The Polytechnic Library has a Circulation Section where the library staff carries out library users’ registration, lending of books to library users, filing of catalogue cards, receipt of, recording of students’ research projects and clearance of graduating students, etc. Books in the open stacks or shelves in the Circulation Section can be borrowed by library users after completing borrowing formalities at the Circulation Desk. Students are allowed to borrow books for one week whereas, lecturers are permitted to borrow books for two weeks.
PROJECT UNIT
The Polytechnic Library has a Project Unit which preserves National Diploma and Higher National Diploma research projects executed and submitted to the Polytechnic Library by students as part of their graduation requirements. The collection of research projects are in the fields of Law, Mathematics/Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Statistics, Surveying/Geo-Informatics, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Science Laboratory Technology, Biological Sciences, Accounting, Agricultural Science/Technology, Library and Information Science, Business Administration/Management, Information and Records Management, Mass Communication, Public Administration, Secretarial Administration and Banking and Finance.
